Do You Enjoy Peace and Quiet?
Too Bad, say Children
My personal Agents of Chaos and beloved sons, Jun and Julian, provide an endless amount of material to draw from. They are simmering firecrackers of pent-up energy and employ their imaginations for all manner of shenanigans (godspeed to household items of any discernible value).
The other evening, approximately two seconds to bedtime, I looked to see Jun launching himself, midair, from our ragged couch. In the brief amount of time we had turned our backs, these small humans had dragged every pillow and blanket to the living room to create the perfect landing pad. This, by comparison, is a very mild moment of chaos.
Later that evening I doodled in my sketchbook, which led to some finished panels. I had the image of a gravity-defying Jun stuck in my mind, but I also did some character explorations using Julian as reference.
Said doodles:
In the original incident, the boys had stacked their launching pad behind the couch. I decided to change that placement for the composition. I also split the moment into two: the Launch and the Landing.
In my sketchbook I really enjoyed limiting my materials to red + blue colored pencil, layering the two for darker values. I applied this technique to the finished panels and quite like the results.
That’s all for this week, friends.
Tootles,
Maryanna.
