Punching Up

In a recent interview with Frankenstein director Guillermo Del Toro, he was asked, “What scares you?”

“Politicians”, he says. “People with nice suits and horrible souls.”

Del Toro is not wrong. Hypocrisy runs rampant in American politics. Men in expensive suits will give the order to drop bombs on civilians, kidnap people off the street, spread violent rhetoric about marginalized groups, and then proclaim, “there is no place for political violence.”

To keep “Fall Into a Pit of Despair” off my To Do List, I remind myself: there are more of us than there are of them, and there are so many ways to help.

An old illustration that is perennially relevant.

I just wrapped a commission and have turned back to my sketchbook. After a long time of no practice, I’ve been enjoying going back to one of my original loves: drawing characters. Lately it’s been a mix of well that’s cute and pure seething rage.

This week I listened to an episode from one of my favorite podcasts, The Illustration Department, wherein guest Nicholas Kole shared a favorite piece of advice: “reward scrutiny”. In other words, create work that invites you to look closer.

Please feel free to scrutinize this steaming cup of coffee:

I’ve been saving my place in my sketchbook with an old piece of ephemera, this bookmark promo piece from Josh Cochran. I want to say it’s from 2012? Gosh, that’s….a long time ago now. Let’s not think about it.

Speaking of a long time ago, here’s a comic I rediscovered in an old sketchbook, about the internet days of yore:

Remember the days when the internet connected us instead of divided us?

Til next time. A better world is possible.
