Soft Sculpts, Hard Feelings

First, if you’ve signed up to receive my newsletters through Substack, I’m letting you know that I’ve migrated these updates to my main website. I won’t be posting to Substack any longer, as I’ve found the platform to be overly bloated with features and too algo-driven. You’ll still continue to receive an email each time I post. Thanks for being here.

I’ve been getting some solid desk time lately, churning out two different and very opposing bodies of work. One is tender and meant for an audience of children, a project I’m calling FEELINGS. The other will be using the same soft materials but will address some very grownup topics. More on that later.

In-between poking bits of fluff with a felting needle and stitching small things, the maelstrom of U.S. politics thrums in the back of my mind always. We are living in very mask off times. Some folks are experiencing shock and dismay at the level of violence the U.S. will unleash on its own citizens, while others understand this as a logical continuation of how American empire operates.

I made this super quick short form comic to address the complexity of ICE murderer Jonathan Ross and his marriage to an immigrant Filipina. I could have absolutely drawn this better, but this guy only deserves my sloppiest linework.

As ICE violence escalates and the Trump administration spins out its lies despite ample evidence to the contrary, we have been witnessing the brave communities of Minneapolis stand up for their neighbors, sometimes at deadly cost. This is not the time for silence or “business as usual”. People are protesting in many ways, including with art.

  • Bambu from Beatrock Music sent me a vinyl copy of his newest album, They’re Burning the Boats!, which features my artwork. I was very stoked to see my illustrations on a vinyl sleeve. Bambu has been bagging on ICE for years. Support an artist who always speaks truth to power and buy his music!

  • I attended an art opening for the first time in foreverrrrrrrr and popped into Purple Door Gallery in SE Portland for showing of Pictures of You, curated by fellow artist Ryan Bubnis. It was so good to mix with Portland’s local art community and see a couple art pals.

Til next time friends.
